Changes that will adversely affect our lives are becoming increasingly unmistakable. My youthful optimistic imagery of an advanced civilization living in love and peace and harmony isn’t going to come about.

Why is there so much discord around the globe?

Populations are stressed, and people have to eat, and hungry people are willing to do whatever it takes. When there’s plenty, they share. When there’s less, they hoard. It’s human nature. Hungry people are unhappy and desperate. Eat or die.

Deforestation, civil unrest and the onset of drought-driven crop failures have left entire communities and populations to become suddenly destitute and homeless, the detritis that is the cost of civilization and development.

When the population of an adversely affected area can’t find food where they live, they will move somewhere else, and that’s the problem, their neighbors may not treat newcomers with open arms. Many nations are having to deal with immigrants trying to enter their borders to seek a better life situation in which the inhabitants figure their lives will suffer loss at the immigrants’ gain. Long time inhabitants view the newcomers, who will often work for less, often a lot less, as wage competitors, the more of Them, the less for Us.

This crisis of immigration serves as a catalyst to certain politicians who would use the tragic results of failing governments and political unrest to further alienate the general populations into Us vs Them.

Maybe the Kingston Trio got it right back in 1959, with “Merry Minuet”.

“They’re rioting in Africa. They’re starving in Spain. The whole world is festering with unhappy souls. The French hate the Germans. The Germans hate the Poles. Italians hate Yugoslavs. South Africans hate the Dutch. And I don’t like anybody very much!

“But we can be tranquil and thankful and proud For man’s been endowed with a mushroom shaped cloud. And we know for certain that some lovely day Someone will set the spark off and we will all be blown away.”
