Ingsoc (English Socialism) has taken Oceania to the depths of dystopian despair in George Orwell’s fictional novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Fiction? When I first read his book in the ’70s, 1984 seemed so far away. And yet, when it caught up with me, I was going through a major life change. Alone and drifting after my recent divorce, IBM came to my rescue by offering me the opportunity of a lifetime, a chance to leave the service department and move into the Sales & Marketing Division, Large Systems, Large Clients.
At that time, in 1984, I was too busy going through Entry Marketing Education classes to ponder the affairs of the world civilization at large.
Now, looking back, the revolution proceeded without notice or fanfare, but has taken root, nonetheless. and the principles of Newspeak are not all that much different from Newt Gingrich and Frank Luntz’s Glittering Generalities, another simplified way of shaping political thoughts with ‘feel good’ emotionally powerful but meaningless expressions.
