Charles Darwin took notice of the struggle to survive and developed his “On the Origins of Species” theory of natural selection.
People adapt and change to exploit their environment as sources of food are available. One of the mechanisms of adaptation is migration, the ability to follow the seasons to new grazing grounds, for example.
We are witness to whole sections of Central and South American populations fleeing their native homelands because of megaplantation landowner exploitation, and drug cartels, often with the aid of armed mercenaries. In Africa, whole nations pursue rare earth minerals and “blood” diamonds.
Unable to compete, unable to migrate, or due to changing environments, some species and populations will die off.
Across the globe, some nations are no longer able to support their populations because:
- There is not enough food to feed the population – overpopulation – or
- The country’s leaders are exploiting the lands – massive monoculture agricultural operations like palm oil, extraction of mineral resources, etc. – forcing indigenous populations off their cultural homelands.
