Topsail Island offers 20+ miles of wide sandy beaches, especially at low tide. It is sublime in its beauty especially during the start and end of the day, wide and flat when the tide is out, and for now the island’s ends offer glimpses of what it must have looked like before development.
In earlier days it was known as ‘sandspit’ and access was by boat on cable ferry. Local farmers turned their livestock out to graze on the warm weather grasses that grew between the dunes. During the late days of World War II and later the military tested a new revolutionary ramjet rocket in a feasibility project that, once proven, went on to be the basis for the Talos missile system.
